Koboko Institute of Sciences and Technology (KIST) is a health training, Business and Technology tertiary institution founded by Pioneer Health Foundation (PHF), a registered company established to offer medical services and training of health workers in Uganda. The Institute was established in 2017.
Pioneer Health Foundation (PHF) is a registered company established to offer medical services and training of health workers in Uganda and it was established in 2011 to offer medical services in branch network model in the West Nile districts of Arua, Yumbe, Maracha Nebbi and Koboko.Therefore PHF established Koboko Institute of Science & Technology (KIST) to to take care of the training element of PHF.
The institute is established to offer allied health courses such as Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy, Clinical medicine, Medical radiography, Orthopaedic medicine, Environmental health science and Health management sciences. However, the initial courses that shall be offered as per academic year 2017/2018 will be Certificate in Medical laboratory technology and Diploma in pharmacy. The other programs shall be introduced as the resource capacity may allow.
The institute has governing council constituted to represent the interests of the various stake holders according to the provisions of the Universities and other tertiary institutions act 2001. KIST is licenced and registered by the Uganda Allied Health Professionals Council (UAHPC) and arrangements are under way to get licence from National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), a body corporate that is mandated to regulate tertiary institutions.
The Government of Uganda recognizes the important role being played by the private sector in providing education to citizens of this country as envisaged in the education act 2008 that provides for any private person or organization to operate a private school. It is significant to acknowledge this role of the private sector in areas where there exists a gap that public sector may not bridge. According to the Ministry of Health National Health Policy of 2010, there is a deficit in paramedical Personnel, hence the need to have more tertiary training institutions in the country to bridge this gap.
The institute is located in Pakayo village, Midia parish in Midia Sub County, Koboko District, about 1.5km from the centre of Koboko municipality along Koboko- Oraba high way.
